The European Water Framework Directive states that surface water must be good quality. But the VMM still frequently detects pesticides in waterways in concentrations exceeding standards. Research shows that point pollution is still a significant cause of this. In this demo project, ‘Put a stop to point pollution,’ we want to raise awareness on the one hand and map the existing measures and techniques to avoid point pollution on the other hand for both outdoor crops (vegetables, fruit, arable crops) and indoor crops (fruit vegetables and leafy crops).

Many farmers already take measures to reduce point pollution, but the issue is still underexposed in covered crops. Greenhouse visits will be used to identify when the risk of point contamination is most significant during the spraying process, and specific solutions will be proposed.

Some farmers still hesitate to take measures because they think it will involve extra work, time or cost. Using inspiring examples of preventive measures from fellow farmers, we aim to persuade all farmers to take adequate measures. We will also use a process and market analysis to demonstrate the benefits of preventive measures and techniques.

An essential part of this demo project is to start communicating the knowledge and results as widely as possible and sector-specific. The results from this project will be extensively incorporated into targeted demonstration and communication materials and disseminated to appropriate target audiences. Putting an end to point pollution can only be successful if we reach many people. This is what is being targeted, as described above.
